William Stevenson, the ex-husband of former first lady Jill Biden, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his current wife, according to officials in Delaware.

Authorities said police were called to the couple’s home near Wilmington on Dec. 28 after a report of a domestic dispute. Officers arrived to find 64-year-old Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room.

Despite efforts by police to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for autopsy. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Grand jury indictment follows weeks-long investigation

Following several weeks of investigation, a Delaware grand jury indicted Stevenson, 77, on the murder charge. He was taken into custody on Monday and is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 in cash bail. Police have not confirmed whether he has retained legal counsel.

Jill Biden’s ex-husband came into public attention during their five-year marriage in the early 1970s. The two wed in 1970 when she was a student at the University of Delaware.

Stevenson, who was then 23, later opened The Stone Balloon, a popular music venue in Newark, which gained national recognition as a college bar during that era. The couple divorced in 1975.

No comment from Bidens as investigation continues

Officials have not suggested any connection between Stevenson’s past relationship with Jill Biden and the current criminal case. A spokesperson for former President Joe Biden and the former first lady did not respond to requests for comment.

Linda Stevenson was remembered in an obituary as a dedicated family woman and a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan. In recent years, she operated a small bookkeeping business, according to her family.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing and declined to release additional information about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
