The Region of Crete has officially been named the European Region of Gastronomy for 2026 by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT).

This esteemed title, announced at a ceremony in the island’s town of Heraklion, celebrates Crete’s culinary excellence and strongly validates the Cretan diet’s enduring global relevance and profound health benefits.

Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis highlighted the award as “an investment in the future, made collectively by the Region and all local stakeholders,” underscoring the collaborative efforts behind this achievement.

IGCAT’s unanimous decision followed a rigorous evaluation by European experts, recognizing the coordinated actions led by the educational development organization Ploigos in showcasing Crete’s rich gastronomic heritage.

Crete’s gastronomy and diet: A pillar of health and longevity

The Cretan diet is far more than a collection of delicious recipes; it’s a globally recognized paradigm for health and longevity. As far back as 1998, French scientist Serge Renaud famously stated, “Don’t look for a pill to replace the Cretan diet. There’s no such thing.”

His words perfectly encapsulate the scientific consensus: numerous medical studies have consistently affirmed its remarkable health advantages, associating it with low incidences of chronic diseases and some of the lowest mortality rates worldwide.

This nutritional heritage is deeply rooted in Crete’s unique natural environment, benefiting from its rich biodiversity, advantageous climate, and time-honored traditional farming practices.

The diet’s strength lies in the simplicity, freshness, and authenticity of its local ingredients. Furthermore, the island’s Orthodox fasting traditions have historically fostered a naturally balanced, predominantly plant-based diet.

Key components of the traditional Cretan diet include

All in all, Crete’s traditional diet is known for its:

  • abundant use of olive oil, often consumed raw: Extra virgin olive oil is the primary fat source, rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants.
  • high consumption of fruits and vegetables, including seasonal fruits, wild greens (horta), and a wide variety of vegetables, which are consumed daily.
  • legumes and grains and, in general, pulses such as lentils and chickpeas, along with whole grains, which form a significant part of the diet, and provide fiber and protein.
  • moderate intake of fish and seafood, especially small, oily fish, which provide omega-3 fatty acids.
  • limited consumption of red meat and poultry, with meat being consumed sparingly and often reserved for special occasions.
  • dairy products, specifically primarily goat and sheep’s milk products such as cheese and yogurt, consumed in moderation.
  • herbs and wild plants, used extensively for flavor and their medicinal properties.
  • moderate wine consumption, including red wine, which is consumed with meals.

Bridging agriculture and tourism in Crete

Crete’s agricultural bounty is a true gift of nature, diversified by the island’s varied terrain and altitude differences. The Region of Crete has actively worked to create strong links between its primary agricultural sector and the burgeoning tourism industry.

A prime example of this commitment is the Cretan Gastronomy Center in the island’s town of Rethymno, which serves as a hub for information, traditional recipes, and educational programs for culinary enthusiasts.

Visitors to Crete can immerse themselves in this rich culinary culture through experiences such as vineyard tastings and the savoring of authentic traditional dishes in charming village tavernas.

The island’s unwavering focus on sustainable farming practices and certified products ensures safe, high-quality food production with minimal environmental impact. This dedication to quality and authenticity is what truly distinguishes Cretan gastronomy, making it an irresistible destination for food lovers globally.
