The islands of Syros and Naxos in Greece proved instrumental in securing Greece the No. 2 spot globally, according to a new report highlighting destinations that prioritize soul, culture, and sustainability.
Moneycontrol.com has released its prestigious list of the 20 countries offering the world’s highest-quality travel experiences for 2026. Leveraging the results of the Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, the international news outlet conducted extensive research to identify specific destinations that stand out for their rich local heritage and unspoiled natural beauty. Syros and Naxos have emerged as the premier Greek representatives on this elite list.
Out of 43 suggested regions across 20 countries—spanning Europe, the Americas, Asia, Oceania, and Africa—Greece, represented by Naxos and Syros, holds the second-place position for 2026.
According to the report:
“This list is more than a ranking; it is a glimpse into the future of travel. It proves that the world’s most beloved destinations are those that honor authenticity and sustainability. With sun-drenched islands, whitewashed villages, and a culinary tradition that speaks to the heart, Greece combines aesthetic beauty with legendary hospitality. Travelers are now looking beyond the surface to discover hidden gems like Naxos and Syros, where local life continues to beat with a vibrant, authentic pulse.”
Syros: A destination for all seasons
Local representatives believe these accolades reflect a shift in modern travel trends. Ioannis A. Voutsinos, Deputy Mayor of Tourism for Syros-Hermoupolis, noted that the island’s appeal extends far beyond the traditional summer rush:
“Syros possesses the ‘raw materials’ to offer unique experiences even in the off-season. Year after year, our narrative of ‘traveling off the beaten path’ gains momentum. It’s no coincidence that our cultural program—featuring over 50 events including concerts, theater, and dance—now runs from May through November. Our rich history and year-round traditions reveal a different, deeper side of Syros.”
Naxos: Where every traveler is a guest—not a tourist
Alongside Greece’s island of Syros, on Naxos and the Small Cyclades, the focus remains on personal connection and variety. Vangelis Katsaras, Deputy Mayor of Tourism for Naxos and the Small Cyclades, emphasized the island’s rejection of mass-tourism tropes:
“[On] Naxos, no one is treated as a ‘mass tourist.’ The ‘Island of Ariadne’ offers the perfect balance of relaxation, spiritual enrichment, and recreation. As the largest island in the Cyclades, it provides endless alternatives for families, solo travelers, and adventure enthusiasts alike. Whether it’s exploring medieval alleys, tasting our world-renowned local products, or engaging in windsurfing and island-hopping, Naxos is a magnet for those seeking a meaningful connection with history and nature.”
