The town of Ermoupoli on the Greek island of Syros was recently ranked as the friendliest city in Europe for solo travelers.

According to the popular tourist website booking.com, which draws on millions of reviews each year for its rankings of destinations, Ermoupoli topped every other city in Europe in terms of aspects such as walkability, group accommodations, and local community life that allows solo travelers to meet others and make new friends.

The charm of the capital of Syros, Ermoupoli

Ermoupoli is the picturesque capital of Syros and the Cyclades archipelago.
Syros is an island that could be described as a hidden gem in the Cyclades, known for its impressive neoclassical architecture and welcoming atmosphere. Many of Ermoupoli’s grand marble buildings date back to the mid-1800s, a prosperous era when the city thrived as a major port and commercial center.
Architectural highlights include the Apollo Theatre, which is a miniature of Milan’s La Scala. Additionally, the Ermoupoli Industrial Museum showcases the island’s manufacturing heritage, allowing solo travelers to learn about the island’s rich history. Of course, Ermoupoli is also home to numerous elegant mansions built by wealthy shipowners and merchants in previous decades.
The pedestrian-friendly town center invites visitors for a leisurely exploration, although the steep streets and steps can be a workout. Ano Syros, the charming medieval quarter perched on the hill above Ermoupoli’s town center, features charming narrow alleys and stunning colorful doors, typical of the Cyclades.
The capital of the Cyclades archipelago offers a relaxed, authentic Greek island experience without the mass tourist crowds of other nearby destinations. Friendly locals, beautiful beaches a short bus ride away, and a traditional Greek vibe make Ermoupoli a welcoming and ideal base for solo travelers looking to slowly discover authentic Greek charm.

If you’re going to visit Syros, it’s best to stay in the town of Ermoupoli, especially the neighborhood of Vaporia. Located just above the downtown area, the Vaporia neighborhood has an incredible view of the waters off the island and the entrance to the port. Tourists will enjoy incredible service and an authentic stay at one of the many local renovated neoclassical hotels, such as the eco-friendly Aristide Hotel.
Besides boasting jaw-droppingly stunning interior decor, Aristide is unique for its environmental consciousness. The hotel serves local, organic food and composts any leftovers. It also plants trees in an effort to offset the carbon footprint of its guests, while single-use plastics aren’t entirely avoided.

The other three European destinations

Along with Greece’s Ermoupoli, three more European destinations made it to the top of the booking.com list of ideal places to visit as a solo traveler. Viana do Castelo, Grindelwald, and Uzès are three charming European destinations that are the most welcoming places for solo travelers in Europe.

Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal attracts numerous water sports enthusiasts with its Atlantic beaches and impressive waves. It also offers historic architecture, a lively fishing port, and a restored hospital ship museum.
Nestled in the Swiss Alps, Grindelwald is a haven for skiers, hikers, and nature lovers from around the world. With iconic peaks like the Eiger and Jungfrau accessible via cog railways and cable cars, it is a dream winter destination.
Uzès in southern France’s Provence region is known for its honey-colored stone houses, charming medieval streets, and a vibrant market where friendly sellers try to persuade you to buy local specialties.
